2nd Grade - Ms. Gina Johnstone
Welcome to room 10!
Hello everyone and welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! I'm so excited to be teaching 2nd grade again this year. This is my 6th year teaching at Beresford, and 7th year teaching overall. I've taught first grade, a first/second grade combination class, and now I am loving second grade. I earned my Bachelors degree from UCLA in English, and completed my teaching credential at San Jose State University. I am currently earning a Masters Degree in Educational Administration - I'll be done June 2018!
At Beresford, I've truly found a home and community. I stay busy by fulfilling many different roles at school. I love using my Growth Mindset to challenge myself to try new things.
Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my family, especially my wonderful niece. I also like to travel and participate actively in my church community. Otherwise, I love to read, bake and cook, do crafts, and spend time outside. My challenge for myself this year is to go someplace new each month and take Zumba classes once a week because I love to dance!
Dear Room 10 families,
Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing winter break. The students seem rested and ready to learn!
LIFESKILLS Day part 2 is in less than a month! On Wednesday, February 7th Beresford will be having a second LIFESKILLS Immersion Day to learn about the Spring LIFESKILLS. I have a parent volunteer sign up sheet taped to the classroom window. I need 2 parents to walk with and chaperone the students as they participate in the activities.
Our 2nd field trip is on February 15th! We will be going to the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco. Permission slips will go home on Monday, January 22nd and will be due Wednesday, January 31st. I will need 6 parent chaperones to attend the field trip.
Here is what we are currently working on:
Thematic Unit of Study: Characters in Fiction Stories
Benchmark Advance: Unit 4 - Many Characters, Many Points of View
Reading: We are working on analyzing characters in a story, using context clues to determine word meaning, and comparing and contrasting stories.
Writing: Students will create a fictional character and write a series of short stories. Stories will include a character(s) in a setting with a problem and solution.
Envision Math: Topic 9 - Subtracting Two-Digit Numbers
LIFESKILLS of the month are Trustworthiness, Truthfulness, Resourcefulness, and Creativity. Please talk with your students about how to live these LIFESKILLS everyday.
Thank you to families who sent in Box Tops! The PTA is still collecting so please check your products at home.

Homework is assigned daily. Homework consists of 20 minutes of reading, a reading log question, and a double-sided math practice worksheet. Students take home their book bag each day and bring it back to school each morning. It is extremely important that the book bag comes back to school each day.
