Welcome to room 10!

Hello everyone and welcome to the 2017-2018 school year!  I'm so excited to be teaching 2nd grade again this year.  This is my 6th year teaching at Beresford, and 7th year teaching overall.  I've taught first grade, a first/second grade combination class, and now I am loving second grade.  I earned my Bachelors degree from UCLA in English, and completed my teaching credential at San Jose State University.  I am currently earning a Masters Degree in Educational Administration - I'll be done June 2018!

At Beresford, I've truly found a home and community.   I stay busy by fulfilling many different roles at school.  I love using my Growth Mindset to challenge myself to try new things.

Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my family, especially my wonderful niece.  I also like to travel and participate actively in my church community.  Otherwise, I love to read, bake and cook, do crafts, and spend time outside.  My challenge for myself this year is to go someplace new each month and take Zumba classes once a week because I love to dance!

MAY NEWSLETTER

Dear Room 10 families,
I hope you’re all enjoying Spring Time this year. While we might complain about how cool it is right now, it is certainly preferred to hot summertime weather especially with several more weeks of school ahead of us.

We have some important and exciting units left to study, and here is what we are currently working on in 2nd grade:

Thematic Unit of Study: How do we react to changes in Nature? & How do the goods we make, buy, and sell connect us?

Benchmark Advance: Unit 8 - Wind & Water Change Earth & Unit 9 - Buyers & Sellers

Reading: We are reading informational texts and traditional literature. We are working on problem & solution, cause & effect, and understanding the main idea and supporting it with key details.

Writing:  Students are writing opinion letters.  We are learning about recommending books to others as well as the persuasive language that we should use to convince readers of our opinions.

Envision Math: Topic 13 & 14 - Money!

LIFESKILLS of the month are Flexibility, Curiosity, and Organization.  Please talk with your students about how to live these LIFESKILLS everyday.

Please plan to join us on May 9th for our Talent Show and PTA Founder’s Day from 6-8pm in the LGI.  Come see our students perform!

Mark your calendars for student-led conferences May 29-June 1st, along with our final field trip to the SF Exploratorium on June 5th.

Sincerely,

Miss Johnstone

HOMEWORK

Homework is assigned daily.  Homework consists of 20 minutes of reading, a reading log question, and a double-sided math practice worksheet.  Students take home their book bag each day and bring it back to school each morning.  It is extremely important that the book bag comes back to school each day.
